Legal basis: For which classes is an eye test mandatory?
The cost of the eye test for a driver’s license is around seven euros.
In addition to theoretical and practical driving lessons, driver’s license applicants must complete a number of administrative requirements before a driver’s license can be issued. According to § 12 of the Driver’s License Regulation (FeV), this also includes the eye test for a driver’s license.
Section 12 FeV also specifies the regulations that apply in this regard. Essentially, it is important to note which driver’s license class is being applied for.
The following regulation applies to classes AM, A1, A, B, BE, L, or T:
The eye test is carried out by an officially recognized eye test center […]. Before carrying out the eye test, the eye test center must verify the identity of the applicant by inspecting their identity card or passport. The eye test is passed if the central daytime visual acuity with or without visual aids reaches at least the value specified in Appendix 6, Number 1.1. If the eye test reveals a lower visual acuity, the applicant may repeat the eye test with visual aids or with improved visual aids (Section 12 (2) FeV).
