FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About the B196 Extension.

What exactly is the B196 extension?

The code number 196 is added to your existing Class B driver's license and allows you to ride light motorcycles up to 125cc (max. 11 kW). You don't need an extra exam – just driver training at a driving school.

What are the requirements for B196?

You must be at least 25 years old and have held a Class B driver's license for at least 5 years. No eye test, no medical examination – just the driver training.

Do I have to take an exam?

No. Neither a theoretical nor a practical exam is required. You complete driver training with at least 4 theory and 5 practical units of 90 minutes each. With our certificate, you go straight to the licensing office.

Can I ride with B196 abroad?

No, the B196 extension is valid exclusively in Germany. Abroad, you need a Class A1 driver's license, which requires regular training with an exam.

Does B196 also apply to scooters?

Yes – B196 entitles you to ride all light motorcycles and scooters up to 125cc and max. 11 kW, whether manual or automatic.

How long does the B196 training take?

The training comprises at least 4 theory units and 5 practical units of 90 minutes each. At Peters Fahrschule, we bundle the theory into 2 evenings. Depending on scheduling availability, the entire training can be completed within a few weeks.

Can I upgrade B196 to A1 later?

No, B196 is not a full driver's license class. For Class A1 (or A2/A), regular motorcycle training with a theoretical and practical exam is required.
