Why B197 is the new standard.
In the past, you had to choose: Either stressful manual (Class B) or restricted automatic (Class B78). B197 combines the best of both worlds.
You complete the majority of training and the exam comfortably on automatic vehicles. Through an integrated manual competency course (min. 10 driving lessons + 15 min test drive with the instructor), you are then allowed to drive manual cars worldwide. Without any restriction on your driver's license.
➔ Read more about the regulation at ADAC| Feature | Classic (B) | B197 (Recommended) |
|---|---|---|
| Exam on | Manual car (Stressful!) | Automatic (Relaxed) |
| Allowed to drive | Everything | Everything |
| Training | Manual only | Mix (Automatic + Manual) |
| Stalling during exam | Possible | Impossible |
*B197 is statistically the more successful method for getting your driver's license.
Choose Your Path
We have reduced the options to the essentials. Here are the three paths to your car driver's license in detail.
Class B197
The All-Rounder
The perfect combination of a relaxed exam and full freedom.
- Training: Mostly automatic + 10h manual
- Exam: On automatic (No stalling!)
- Driver's License: No restriction (allowed to drive manual)
- Ideal for: Almost every student
- BF17: Also available as accompanied driving
Class B
Manual / Stick Shift
The traditional way. You learn and take the exam entirely on a manual car.
- Training: 100% manual transmission
- Exam: On manual car (higher stress factor)
- Driver's License: No restriction
- Disadvantage: Longer learning time for clutch/friction point
- BF17: Also available as accompanied driving
Class B78
Automatic Only
If you categorically rule out manual or have medical reasons.
- Training: 100% automatic
- Exam: On automatic
- Driver's License: Code 78 restriction entered
- Disadvantage: You are NOT allowed to drive manual cars
- BF17: Also available as accompanied driving
Upgrade B78 ➔ B197 (Also retroactively!)
Already have the pure automatic driver's license (B78)? We can remove the restriction at any time to give you the option to drive manual.
- Only 10 driving lessons on manual car
- 15-minute test drive (instructor)
- No new exam at TÜV required!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
Which driver's license is better: B or B197?
We almost always recommend the B197 license. You learn stress-free on modern automatic vehicles and also take the exam on an automatic. Through an integrated manual transmission training, you are still allowed to drive manual cars worldwide later – without any disadvantages or restrictions.
How much does the car license cost in München?
The costs strongly depend on the number of your driving lessons. They consist of a base fee, practice lessons, the 12 statutory special drives, and TÜV fees. Use our price calculator for a realistic estimation.
How fast can I get my driver's license?
The training takes 3 to 5 months on average. With our intensive theory courses (8 lessons per week), you can complete this part very quickly. The bottleneck is often the license application at the KVR (Kreisverwaltungsreferat) München, which can take about 8-10 weeks.
Does it make sense to get the license at 17 (BF17)?
Absolutely! With accompanied driving from 17 (BF17), you benefit from a year of additional driving practice under supervision. Statistically, the risk of accidents for novice drivers drops enormously. The training is exactly the same as for the normal Class B or B197.
What advantages does starting on the simulator offer?
With our high-tech simulator, you begin your training completely stress-free and without environmental influences. You learn starting, shifting, and basic traffic rules before heading into the real München city traffic. This often saves expensive driving lessons in the car.
Can I switch from another driving school to you?
Yes, switching driving schools is possible at any time and straightforward. Already completed theory and practical lessons will be recognized. You just need your training certificate from your previous school. We are happy to advise you personally on the process.
When should I submit my license application at the KVR?
As early as possible – ideally right when you sign up. The application at the KVR München (Kreisverwaltungsreferat) currently takes about 8–10 weeks. During this time, you can already start your theory classes and simulator lessons.
In which languages can I take the theory exam?
The theory exam at the TÜV is available in 12 languages, including German, English, French, Russian, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, and Croatian. We offer our theory classes in German and English.
Do I need to pass the theory exam before I can start driving?
No! You can start practical driving lessons in parallel with theory. You only need to have passed the theory exam before taking the practical exam. This way, you make the best use of the waiting time for your KVR application.
How many driving lessons per week can I take?
That is up to you – depending on your schedule, 1 to 4 driving lessons per week are possible. Even more during intensive phases. We recommend at least 2 lessons per week so you make quick progress and don't forget what you've learned between sessions.
