Training Structure

Basic Material vs. Additional Material

Every theory training in Germany is divided into two areas. Exact compliance with these requirements is mandatory for admission to the theoretical driver's license exam.

01

General Basic Material (Topic 1-12)

The basic material forms the foundation of traffic law (right of way, signs, behavior). Here, the legislator focuses on achieving the total number of completed double lessons.

Legal situation "Attending twice": It is legally permissible to attend lessons twice in order to compensate for missed sessions (e.g. listening to lesson 5 twice because lesson 4 was missed). However, for a solid exam preparation, we still recommend attending each topic once.
02

Class-Specific Additional Material

This module covers the in-depth technical specifics of the booked vehicle class (e.g. two-wheel riding physics or truck braking systems).

Legal situation 100% mandatory: In the additional material section, attendance is absolutely binding for every required topic. Attending a substitute lesson multiple times is strictly prohibited. Without complete digital proof of all specific modules, the examination authority will deny admission.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Theory Lessons in Munich

How many theory lessons do I need for a car driver's license (Class B)?
For a first-time Class B license, you need a total of 14 double lessons of 90 minutes each in Germany. These consist of 12 lessons of general basic material (traffic signs, right of way) and 2 lessons of class-specific additional material (car vehicle technology). When upgrading (e.g. if you already hold Class AM), the basic material is halved to 6 units, so you only need a total of 8 double lessons.
Can you attend theory lessons twice?
Here we must distinguish between basic material and additional material:

Yes, for basic material: It is legally permitted to attend the general lessons 1 to 12 multiple times in order to reach the required total number of hours (e.g. 12 units for first-time acquisition). So if you miss topic 4, you can attend topic 5 twice.
No, for additional material: For the class-specific part (e.g. car technology or special motorcycle physics), there is mandatory attendance without exception for every defined lesson. Duplicate attendance is not accepted by the system for exam registration.
How long does the theory training take on average?
The duration depends entirely on your personal schedule. At Peters Driving School Munich, we offer up to 8 theory lessons per calendar week. This allows you to complete the entire theory training for a car driver's license in just under two intensive weeks if desired.
Do I need to pass the theory exam before I can take practical driving lessons?
No, you can (and should) combine practical and theory training. First driving lessons -- optionally also stress-free in our driving simulator -- are possible in parallel with or even before the theory content. However, you will only be admitted to the practical driving test (TUeV) once the theory exam has been successfully passed.
