How to read your vehicle registration

How to find the maximum authorized mass in your Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I.

1
Get your vehicle registration – The Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (the card-sized document you must keep in the car).
2
Find field F.1 – "Technically permissible maximum laden mass in kg". This is the value that counts for the license calculation.
3
Check field F.2 – "Permissible maximum laden mass in the member state of registration". Often identical to F.1, but can be lower.
4
Repeat for the trailer – Read the same fields in the trailer's own registration document.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Trailer Licenses.

Which license do I need for a caravan/camper trailer?

It depends on the total weight of the combination. If your car + caravan together weigh a maximum of 3,500 kg (gross vehicle weight), Class B is sufficient. Between 3,500 and 4,250 kg you need code B96 (one-day course, no exam). Above that you need Class BE. Use our calculator above for your specific combination.

How do I calculate the total weight of my vehicle combination?

Add the maximum authorized mass (zGM) of your towing vehicle and the zGM of your trailer. Important: What counts is not the actual weight, but the maximum authorized mass registered in your Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (vehicle registration document) – field F.1 or F.2.

What is the difference between B96 and BE?

With B96 you may drive combinations up to 4,250 kg. You only need a one-day course (7 hours, no exam). BE allows combinations up to 7,000 kg but requires a full training with a practical TÜV exam. For most caravans and horse trailers, B96 is sufficient.

Do I need an extra license for a small trailer?

Not necessarily. Trailers with a maximum authorized mass of up to 750 kg may always be towed with Class B – even if the total weight of the combination exceeds 3,500 kg. This applies to most boat trailers and small utility trailers.

Where do I find the maximum authorized mass of my vehicle?

In the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (vehicle registration document) under field F.1 (technically permissible maximum laden mass) or F.2 (permissible maximum laden mass in the member state of registration). For the trailer, you find the information in the same fields of its own registration document.

What happens if I tow a trailer with the wrong license?

This constitutes driving without a valid license – a criminal offense under § 21 StVG. Penalties include fines or up to 1 year imprisonment, points on your record, and revocation of your existing license. Insurance coverage is also voided.

Which license do I need for a horse trailer?

Horse trailers typically weigh between 1,500 and 3,000 kg maximum authorized mass. Combined with an SUV (approx. 2,200 kg), you quickly exceed 4,250 kg – requiring Class BE. For lighter combinations, B96 may suffice. Check it with our calculator!

Is Class B sufficient for a boat trailer?

In most cases, yes. Small boat trailers often weigh only 400–750 kg and fall under the 750 kg rule. With Class B, you may always tow these. Only with very large boats on heavy trailers might B96 or BE be necessary.

What does code number 96 mean on the driver's license?

The code number 96 is an extension of Class B, printed on the back of your license. It permits combinations with a total weight between 3,500 and 4,250 kg. You obtain it through a one-day driver training (7 hours) without an exam.

How long does the B96 course take in Munich?

At Peters Fahrschule, the B96 course takes exactly one day: 2.5 hours theory, 3.5 hours practical training on the practice area, and 1 hour driving in traffic. No exam required. Afterwards, you take the certificate to the KVR Munich.
