Why BF17?

The Benefits of Accompanied Driving

Driving at 17 is the safest way to start your driving life. Here are the best reasons for it:

More Routine

Lower
Accident Risk

Statistics prove: Every kilometer driven under supervision significantly reduces the risk during later solo driving. New drivers benefit from the experience of their companion.

The Probation Period

Finished
Sooner

The two-year probation period begins when you receive your BF17 exam certificate. This means you have your full license at 19 instead of 20.

Transition at 18

Automatically
Class B

On your 18th birthday, you can immediately drive without a companion. You don't have to take any additional exam and will receive your official EU driving license.

Important for Getting Started

Who Can Be a Supervising Companion?

Mom, Dad, Grandma or your older brother: You can have as many supervising companions listed on your exam certificate as you like. However, it is important that every supervising companion meets strict legal criteria in order to safely support you. The companion is not your driving instructor but serves as a responsible advisor in the passenger seat.

1 Minimum Age
The intended supervising companion must have reached the age of 30. Younger persons are not legally permitted to assist with Accompanied Driving.
2 Driving Experience
The person must have held a valid Class B driving license (or the old Class 3) continuously for at least 5 years.
3 Points in Flensburg
A perfect role model: At the time of application (i.e., at registration with the responsible driving license authority), the supervising companion must have no more than 1 point on their driving record.
4 Alcohol Limit & Drugs
As a passenger, you are part of the journey too: The supervising companion is subject to the strict rule of having no more than 0.5 per mille blood alcohol while driving. The consumption of drugs is prohibited without exception (0.0 per mille limit for drugs).

Did you know? Every supervising companion is listed by name on your certificate ("exam certificate"). If additional companions are needed over time, they can be added at the authorities for a small administrative fee.

A Clear Plan

Process & Timeline

The path to the BF17 driving license is identical to the regular Class B license. We organize the process from A to Z.

At 16 1/2 Years: Registration

You register at Peters Driving School. We fill out the driving license application together with you. The details of all planned supervising companions are submitted to the district administration authority (KVR).

Theory and Practical Lessons

You complete your theory lessons and the first driving lessons with our instructors (B197 or Class B available!).

The Exams (Theory & Practical)

You can take the theory exam 3 months before your 17th birthday, and the practical exam 1 month before at TÜV SÜD. The pink paper certificate for BF17 is only issued by the KVR from your 17th birthday onwards.

Official Information

All official application forms and requirements can be found directly at the responsible district administration authorities (driving license office):

Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Accompanied Driving possible with B197?
Yes, we actually recommend this combination 90% of the time! You benefit from the advantages of learning with automatic (stress-free, exam certificate valid for all vehicles).
Is BF17 also valid abroad?
The BF17 exam certificate is currently only valid in Germany and Austria, but by no means in other European or non-European countries (risk of criminal liability for "driving without a license").
Are there additional costs?
The driving training costs the same with us. Only the authorities charge additional fees for verifying each supervising companion. However, in the long run you save significantly on car insurance premiums, as many insurers offer special rates for BF17 graduates!
