VW Tiguan Life 2.0 TDI – your driving school car for Class B in Munich
Stuck at Rosenheimer Platz, a tram on your left, a cyclist on your right, and an SUV ahead whose corners you can't yet feel. That's the moment you climb into the VW Tiguan Life. Raised seat, clear view over the bonnet – and your first lesson in a bigger vehicle: size is no obstacle once you can judge it.
Why you learn in the VW Tiguan Life 2.0 TDI
The first thing our students learn in the Tiguan is a feel for vehicle size – and this SUV is built for exactly that. The raised seating position gives you an overview a small hatchback never could: you spot what's happening at the next junction earlier. At the same time, you have to internalise that there's more car behind you than your gut suggests. Parking, turning, changing lanes – every centimetre counts, and the Tiguan makes you account for those centimetres consciously. The 6-speed manual gearbox demands clean clutch work, including on the Giesing inclines. The rear camera and parking sensors are learning aids, not autopilot: you use them to calibrate your own judgement. Once you've developed this sense of space, you'll handle any vehicle more confidently later – from an estate car to a van.
Technology & equipment at a glance
| Engine & power | 2.0 TDI diesel with 122 hp (90 kW) – strong low-end pull, so you don't have to frantically downshift when pulling away on a hill or overtaking on a country road. |
| Gearbox | Classic 6-speed manual – you learn real clutch and gear work, the basis for the unrestricted category B licence without an automatic limitation. |
| Seating position | Elevated SUV seating with a clear view over the bonnet – ideal for spotting hazards early, while training you to judge the vehicle's size realistically. |
| Front & Lane Assist | Front Assist with pedestrian detection and Lane Assist – safety nets working in the background. In the test you observe and steer yourself; the systems don't do it for you. |
| Rear camera & parking aid | Camera and sensors front and rear – perfect for calibrating your sense of distance in a large SUV, rather than relying on them blindly. |
| Adaptive cruise control | Adaptive cruise control (ACC) keeps the gap to the car ahead – you grasp how large a safe following distance really is and carry that feel into your own driving. |
Assistance systems are a learning aid – you take the exam yourself.
What you may drive
The Tiguan is a standard category B car – with its 6-speed manual you take the test without the automatic restriction. If you switch to an automatic, the B197 rule still lets you earn a full manual licence; the manual practice in the Tiguan covers the gear-shifting part cleanly. With category B you drive this vehicle up to 3.5 t permissible gross weight.
Locations & test area Munich East
Reversing into a parking space on Grünwalder Straße in Giesing, between a delivery van and a fence. In the Tiguan you feel it: here the rear matters, the part you can't fully see in the mirror. You turn around, use the camera as a check – and notice how the big SUV suddenly becomes manageable once you've got its dimensions in your head.
Locations: Haidhausen (Rosenheimer Str. 86), Giesing (Grünwalder Str. 12) & Haar (Münchener Str. 13).
Frequently asked questions
Isn't a large SUV like the Tiguan too unwieldy to learn in?
Quite the opposite: the high seating position gives you a better overview than many small cars. The challenge is judging the rear and the width correctly – and that's exactly what makes you safer in any vehicle later. The camera and parking aid help you train your judgement.
Does the test in the Tiguan count as a manual test?
Yes. The Tiguan has a genuine 6-speed manual gearbox, so you take the test without the automatic restriction and receive a full category B manual licence.
