BMW 118d 2026 – your driving school car for Class B in Munich

You climb in at Haidhausen, press the start button – and a single wide screen lights up where round dials used to sit. No key to turn, no analogue tacho. The 2026 BMW 118d feels, at first touch, like a smartphone on wheels. And that's exactly where learning begins: understand the controls before you ever pull away.

Why you learn in the BMW 118d 2026

A lot of learners grew up with cars that had a button for everything – the 2026 118d works differently. The BMW Live Cockpit shows speed, navigation and assistance messages on one digital display, and much of it runs through touch instead of physical keys. The first thing we drill: getting your eyes back on the road fast. A digital cockpit is comfortable, but it must not pull your attention in. We teach you to read the display in half a second – check your speed, look up, keep driving. That reflex is exactly what your examiner rewards as forward-planning driving. The smooth Steptronic transmission takes the clutch off your plate, freeing your head for traffic and controls. So you don't just learn one car – you learn the operating logic waiting for you in every modern vehicle afterwards.

Technology & equipment at a glance

Model year 2026 The very latest model – you train on technology rolling off the line today, not on a phase-out car. The operating logic you internalise here turns up again in almost every new vehicle you'll drive.
BMW Live Cockpit (digital display) Speedometer, navigation and warnings run on a digital screen. Learning value: we practise the short, controlled glance – read your speed and instantly back to the road. Master that and you drive with the forward-planning calm examiners look for.
Steptronic automatic transmission No clutch, no stalling. Your mind stays free for mirrors, indicators and traffic – ideal for driving safely first and learning the new controls calmly.
Active Guard Plus This assistance package supports in the background but never replaces your control. We show you what it warns and when – but in the test, you drive and you decide.
Lane departure warning When you feel the gentle warning, the lesson lands at once: holding your lane is active work, not luck. A genuine learning aid for building clean lane discipline.
Park assist Handy in everyday life – but in the test you park yourself. We use it to show distances and steering points, then switch it off until you can do it solo.

Assistance systems are a learning aid – you take the exam yourself.

What you may drive

In the BMW 118d automatic you train and test for class B – as B197. You take the exam relaxed on automatic, yet receive the full class B licence and may drive manual cars worldwide afterwards. No automatic restriction stamped in your licence. If you're heading toward a modern automatic or electric car anyway, this vehicle prepares you perfectly.

Locations & test area Munich East

Picture the Rosenheimer Straße / Orleansplatz junction in Haidhausen: a tram crossing, a cyclist from the right, the light about to change. This is where you feel why the digital cockpit reflex matters – one glance held a beat too long and you miss the cyclist. We drive exactly these busy east-Munich junctions until your eyes shuttle automatically between display and road.

Locations: Haidhausen (Rosenheimer Str. 86), Giesing (Grünwalder Str. 12) & Haar (Münchener Str. 13).

Frequently asked questions

Isn't the digital cockpit more distracting than classic dials?

Unfamiliar at first, yes – but from your very first lesson we train the short, controlled glance. You learn to read speed and warnings in a split second. It's actually an advantage: the operating logic from the 2026 118d appears in nearly every new car you'll meet.

Does B197 limit me to automatic cars if I learn in the 118d?

No. After the B197 training and test in this automatic BMW you receive a full class B licence with no automatic restriction. You can then drive both manual and automatic cars – anywhere in the world.
