BMW X1 xDrive 23d – your driving school car for Class B in Munich

You climb in, sit upright, and suddenly you can see over the parked cars all the way to the next junction. That is exactly what makes the BMW X1 xDrive 23d a special car to learn in: a raised seating position, a clear view, less stress in dense Munich traffic. Here you learn to read the city before it surprises you.

Why you learn in the BMW X1 xDrive 23d

The first thing our students notice in the X1 is how much that raised seating position changes the learning itself. You are not peering through a narrow gap between two vans, you are looking over them. That takes the panic out of complexity — pedestrians on Rosenheimer Strasse, a cyclist in your blind spot, a light about to change: you read the scene earlier and gain time for clean decisions. That is precisely what the examiner is looking for: anticipation, not frantic reaction. The SUV overview here is not a comfort gimmick, it is training for your eyes. Still, the body is wider and taller than a small car, so you also learn to judge real vehicle dimensions — when merging, turning, parking. Anyone who can thread the X1 confidently through Giesing develops a sense of space that carries into every car afterwards.

Technology & equipment at a glance

Raised SUV seating position You sit higher than in a normal car and see over parked vehicles — giving you an earlier overview of junctions and pedestrians, and more reaction time in the test.
211 hp (155 kW) diesel The strong diesel pulls confidently, even loaded uphill. You learn to feather the throttle instead of stamping it — smooth hill starts become routine, not a nail-biter.
Steptronic automatic gearbox No clutch, no shifting worries: your focus stays on observation, lane and traffic. Note for class choice — the test here is on automatic (B197 still keeps manual open).
xDrive all-wheel drive Both axles get power, keeping the car steadier in the wet and in winter. You still practise gentle starts deliberately — the tech does not do the job for you, it just forgives beginner slips.
BMW Curved Display Speed, fuel and navigation sit bundled in your line of sight. You learn to glance briefly and return to the road at once — the gaze discipline the examiner also assesses.
Emergency brake assist, rear camera & Parking Assistant The camera makes the reverse-parking learning step visible — but you still practise the shoulder check. Assistance is a learning aid; you drive the test yourself.

Assistance systems are a learning aid – you take the exam yourself.

What you may drive

The X1 is a class B passenger car. Because it has an automatic gearbox (Steptronic), pure automatic training would normally carry the automatic restriction. With B197 you can train and take your test on this automatic SUV yet keep your manual entitlement after passing a short manual assessment drive — ideal if you want to learn relaxed in the X1 but still drive any car later.

Locations & test area Munich East

Picture the approach from Rosenheimer Platz towards Haidhausen: rows of parked cars on the right, a delivery van blocking the view. In the X1 you look down over the van's roof and spot the child at the crossing before they even reach the kerb. You ease off the throttle early — exactly the calm anticipation that counts here.

Locations: Haidhausen (Rosenheimer Str. 86), Giesing (Grünwalder Str. 12) & Haar (Münchener Str. 13).

Frequently asked questions

Isn't such a large SUV harder to drive than a small car?

At first the X1 feels bigger, true — but the raised seating position gives you more overview, and that often makes the city easier, not harder. From day one you learn to judge vehicle dimensions and lane position cleanly. That sense of space carries into any car later.

Does the automatic X1 mean I only get an automatic licence?

Not necessarily. Via B197 you train comfortably on the automatic X1 and also complete a short manual assessment drive. Pass it and your licence carries no automatic restriction — you may then drive manual cars too.
