Why B197 is the New Standard.
In the past, you had to choose: Either a stressful manual licence (Class B) or a restricted automatic licence (Class B78). B197 combines the best of both worlds.
You complete most of your training and the exam on automatic vehicles. Through integrated manual competency training (min. 10 driving hours + 15-min test drive with the instructor), you are then permitted to drive manual cars worldwide. No restriction in your licence.

|---|---|---|
| Exam on | Manual car (stressful!) | Automatic (relaxed) |

| Training | Manual only | Mixed (automatic + manual) |
| Stalling in exam | Possible | Impossible |
*B197 is the statistically more successful method for obtaining a licence.
Choose Your Path
We've reduced the options to the essentials. Here are the three ways to get your car licence in detail.
Class B197
The All-Rounder
The perfect combination of a relaxed exam and full driving freedom.
- Training: Mainly automatic + 10h manual
- Exam: On automatic (no stalling!)
- Licence: No restriction (may drive manual cars)
- Ideal for: Almost every learner driver
- BF17: Also available as accompanied driving
Class B
Manual / Gear
The traditional route. You train and take the exam entirely on a manual car.
- Training: 100% manual gearbox
- Exam: On manual car (higher stress factor)
- Licence: No restriction
- Disadvantage: Longer learning time for clutch/bite point
- BF17: Also available as accompanied driving
Class B78
Automatic Only
If you categorically rule out manual driving or have medical reasons.
- Training: 100% automatic
- Exam: On automatic
- Licence: Code 78 restriction entered
- Disadvantage: You may NOT drive manual cars
- BF17: Also available as accompanied driving
Upgrade B78 ➔ B197 (Also possible retroactively!)
Already have the pure automatic licence (B78)? We can remove the restriction at any time to gain the option to drive manual cars.
- Only 10 driving hours on a manual car
- 15-minute test drive (instructor)
- No new TÜV exam required!

From registration to exam: We structure your training efficiently to save you time and money.
1. Theory & Simulator
While your application at the KVR Munich is being processed (approx. 8–10 weeks), you attend theory lessons (up to 8 lessons per week with intensive courses!) and take your first simulator sessions.
2. Practical (Automatic)
With B197 we start relaxed on the automatic vehicle. You learn traffic awareness without having to think about gear changes. The manual shifting is trained in a separate block.
3. Special Drives & Exam
After the mandatory drives (country road, motorway, night driving), exam preparation follows. The exam itself is taken relaxed on automatic.
