Training Structure

Basic Material vs. Additional Material

Theory training in Germany is divided into two areas. It may only be completed once the statutory scope has been attended and the training objectives have been achieved.

01

General Basic Material (Topic 1-12)

The basic material forms the foundation of traffic law (right of way, signs, behavior). A first-time licence requires at least 12 double lessons of 90 minutes; with a prior licence, the minimum is 6. Lessons follow a systematic training plan.

Training record instead of a blanket rule: The regulations contain no blanket rule under which attending one topic twice replaces a different missed topic. The training plan and documented training status are decisive; ask the driving school to clarify any open content.
02

Class-Specific Additional Material

This module covers the in-depth technical specifics of the booked vehicle class (e.g. two-wheel riding physics or truck braking systems).

Required scope: Each class requires the class-specific material set out in Annex 2.8 of the German Learner Driver Training Regulations. The driving school checks the training plan and training record before completing the theory training.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Theory Lessons in Munich

How many theory lessons do I need for a car driver's license (Class B)?
For a first-time Class B license, you need a total of 14 double lessons of 90 minutes each in Germany. These consist of 12 lessons of general basic material (traffic signs, right of way) and 2 lessons of class-specific additional material (car vehicle technology). When upgrading (e.g. if you already hold Class AM), the basic material is halved to 6 units, so you only need a total of 8 double lessons.
How are attended and missed topics documented?
Theory lessons follow the published training plan. The driving school records completed parts in the training record. The German Learner Driver Training Regulations contain no blanket replacement rule for repeated or missed topics. Ask the driving school to check any open content against your personal training status.
How long does the theory training take on average?
The duration depends entirely on your personal schedule. At Peters Driving School Munich, we offer up to 8 mandatory double lessons per calendar week. This allows you to attend the 14 mandatory double lessons for a first-time Class B licence in just under two intensive weeks if desired.
Do I need to pass the theory exam before I can take practical driving lessons?
No, you can (and should) combine practical and theory training. First driving lessons -- optionally also stress-free in our driving simulator -- are possible in parallel with or even before the theory content. However, you will only be admitted to the practical driving test (TUeV) once the theory exam has been successfully passed.
