Humbaur Tandemanhänger – your driving-school truck for Class BE in Munich

You stand behind the towing vehicle, wind up the jockey wheel, and the coupling locks home with a solid click. Safety pin in, breakaway cable hooked, plug connected. Right here, on our practice ground in Munich-Riem, your trailer training with the Humbaur Tandem begins. No stress, just routine built one step at a time.

Why you learn in the Humbaur Tandemanhänger

The first thing our students master on this Humbaur is clean coupling and uncoupling. Jockey wheel, coupling head, safety pin, breakaway cable, light plug, then a forward tug test: after a few rounds this sequence becomes a reflex, and that is exactly what the examiner checks in the basic manoeuvre task. At 800 kg unladen, the jockey wheel still moves by hand without wrecking your back. But the real heart of it is reversing. Unlike a solo vehicle, the trailer swings opposite to your steering input, and the tandem axle reacts slowly and steadily. That gives you time to counter-steer before the rig jackknifes. On the Riem ground we practise reversing into a bay and around a corner until you spot the counter-steer point in the mirror yourself. We hand you the technique; the driving is yours.

Technology & equipment at a glance

Max. permissible mass 2,500 kg max. permissible mass at 800 kg unladen. You need these figures for combining masses: they decide whether your rig still fits class BE or already requires C1E.
Construction Tandem axle (twin-axle) for high tracking stability. A gift when reversing: the trailer jackknifes more slowly than a single-axle, giving you more time to counter-steer.
Braking Overrun brake: the trailer brakes itself via pressure on the drawbar. You learn to slow gently and look ahead so the rig doesn't lurch and parks cleanly.
Dimensions L 4.52 m, W 2.02 m, H 2.71 m with box body. The tall, closed box blocks your rear view entirely, so you manoeuvre almost solely via the side mirrors, just like in real working life.
Coupling Standard coupling head with jockey wheel, safety pin and breakaway cable. These are exactly the parts you check in the right order when coupling and uncoupling, the first basic manoeuvre task in class BE.
Use case Realistic box for moves and tradework. You don't practise on a toy but on a rig that handles exactly like the trailer you'll later tow privately or for work.

Assistance systems are a learning aid – you take the exam yourself.

What you may drive

With this Humbaur you train class BE (towing vehicle up to 3.5 t plus trailer over 750 kg up to 3.5 t) and class C1E (light truck combination). Coupling/uncoupling and reversing are mandatory basic manoeuvre tasks in both classes. B197 doesn't apply here, that's only about manual/automatic in cars; with a trailer it's all about rig handling.

Locations & test area Munich East

On the practice ground in Munich-Riem we set two cones as a bay lane. You reverse the Humbaur around the corner using only the left mirror until the box sits centred between the cones. Too much steering on the first try; by the third the timing clicks.

Locations: Haidhausen (Rosenheimer Str. 86), Giesing (Grünwalder Str. 12) & Haar (Münchener Str. 13).

Frequently asked questions

Why does the trailer swing the opposite way when reversing?

Because the trailer pivots around its coupling point: steer the towing vehicle right and the Humbaur's rear moves left. Thanks to the tandem axle this happens slowly and predictably, giving you time to correct with a small counter-movement. We practise this on the ground until it becomes instinct.

Do I really have to couple and uncouple myself in the exam?

Yes. Coupling and uncoupling is its own basic manoeuvre task in BE and C1E. You handle the jockey wheel, coupling head, safety pin, breakaway cable and light plug in the right order while the examiner watches. With us it sticks after a few repetitions on the Humbaur, because the parts are exactly the ones you operate in the exam too.
