Kawasaki Z 400 – your driving-school motorcycle for Class A2 in Munich

First stop at the kerb, foot down — and the ground is just there. For many A2 beginners in Munich, confidence starts exactly here: the Kawasaki Z400 lets you plant both feet securely. No tiptoe balancing act, no tippy feeling at a standstill. That calm, solid stance is what makes the start so much easier.

Why you learn in the Kawasaki Z 400

The first thing our students notice on the Z400 is secure ground contact. At just 167 kg ready-to-ride and with a beginner-friendly seating position, this naked bike stands calm — and that takes the pressure off whenever you stop or hold still. When both feet plant solidly, you dare to tackle the tricky moments sooner: hill starts, manoeuvring in a tight yard, creeping slowly up to a red light. The low weight pays off twice over — pushing it in the garage, lifting it upright out of a lean, and the fine balancing at walking pace during the slow-speed exercises. While others still wrestle with the machine's mass, you can focus on what matters: your eyes, throttle, clutch and brake. Respect for the bike quickly turns into real riding feel. That's exactly why the Z400 is our go-to for the first step into class A2.

Technology & equipment at a glance

Weight (ready-to-ride) 167 kg — light enough to hold confidently at a standstill and to manoeuvre without being overwhelmed during the test exercises.
Power / Displacement 45 hp (33.4 kW) from 399 cc — right within the A2 limit, smooth and forgiving, so you learn throttle control without surprises.
Torque 38 Nm — enough pull for clean hill starts, yet not so punchy that the clutch catches you out when slipping it.
Brakes / ABS Modern ABS as a backstop — you practise brake control yourself, but on a wet Rosenheimer Straße it catches you in an emergency.
Gearbox 6-speed gearbox with clearly defined gears — here you learn clean shifting and clutch work, essential for the A2 test.
Cockpit / LED light Multifunction display and bright LED headlights — gear and speed at a glance, good visibility both ways in Munich traffic.

Assistance systems are a learning aid – you take the exam yourself.

What you may drive

The Z400 is a genuine A2 machine: its 33.4 kW sits right inside the permitted A2 power window, with no restrictor tricks. With an A2 licence you can ride it from age 18 — and after two years on A2 the step up to full A is made easier. If you already hold A1 (from 16), you know the naked-bike feel and move up a class seamlessly here. B197 is irrelevant for motorcycles; that rule only concerns the car automatic-gearbox entry.

Locations & test area Munich East

Picture the tight bend on Grünwalder Straße in Giesing: you have to turn at walking pace with a bus waiting behind you. This is where the Z400's low centre of gravity shows — you balance through calmly, foot instantly on the ground if needed, and roll on relaxed instead of wobbling.

Locations: Haidhausen (Rosenheimer Str. 86), Giesing (Grünwalder Str. 12) & Haar (Münchener Str. 13).

Frequently asked questions

Isn't the Z400 too heavy for smaller or lighter beginners?

Quite the opposite — at 167 kg ready-to-ride it's one of the lightest bikes in its class. Combined with the beginner-friendly seat height, most of our students can plant both feet securely, and that builds confidence from the very first lesson.

Do I need to have the Z400 restricted for A2?

No. Its 33.4 kW is right within the A2 limit as standard, so no restrictor is needed. You train and take your test on a full, unrestricted machine.
