KTM Duke 125 – your driving-school motorcycle for Class A1 in Munich
Rolling across Rosenheimer Platz, the light turns green, and beneath you a single-cylinder wakes up that feels like a shrunken big bike. That's exactly the KTM 125 Duke: an uncompromisingly sporty 125 on which your A1 start in Munich never tastes like a beginner scooter, but like a real motorcycle.
Why you learn in the KTM Duke 125
The thread running through this bike is the sporty 125 for A1 — and that's more than just an image. The 15 PS (11 kW) from the single-cylinder arrive directly and honestly, with no soft cushioning: from day one you learn to meter the throttle instead of leaning on a sluggish engine. That's exactly what the examiner watches for later in city traffic. The real 6-speed gearbox forces you to coordinate clutch, throttle and shift foot cleanly — the foundation that lets you master any bigger machine afterwards too. The ABS catches an over-hard emergency stop, but we still drill looking ahead and braking early, because you ride the hazard stop yourself in the test. The sporty riding position trains your posture early: upright, alert, arms relaxed. What our students take away here is a feel for riding that carries straight over to A2 and A later on.
Technology & equipment at a glance
| Power / engine | 15 PS (11 kW), single-cylinder four-stroke with fuel injection — the exact A1 ceiling. You learn that lively performance comes not from displacement but from clean throttle control. |
| Gearbox | 6-speed manual gearbox. Real clutching and shifting is the heart of your A1 training: master the hand-shift here and you'll handle any machine later. |
| Brakes / ABS | ABS as standard. It prevents lock-up during an emergency stop — but we still practise looking ahead and braking early, because you ride the hazard stop yourself. |
| Seat height / lowering | The bike is lowered. Both feet reach the ground securely — giving you the stability at the lights and when manoeuvring that beginners need most. |
| Display / TFT | Modern TFT display with clear gear and speed readout. You keep the selected gear in view and get used early to the short, controlled instrument glance. |
| Lighting | LED headlight. Seeing and being seen in Munich's dusk and tunnels — a safety plus you don't have to mention in the test, but you feel it. |
Assistance systems are a learning aid – you take the exam yourself.
What you may drive
The KTM 125 Duke is an A1 motorcycle: max 125 cc and 11 kW, ridden from age 16 with a real manual gearbox. With the B196 extension you may also ride it within Germany on an existing class B car licence. If you move up to A2 or A later, you build directly on the shifting and braking learned here.
Locations & test area Munich East
Picture the left-turn lane from Grünwalder Strasse towards Giesing station: oncoming traffic, tram tracks, a gap you have to read yourself. This is where the sporty Duke shines — light, agile, with direct throttle — and you practise exactly the clean lane positioning and uphill start that come up constantly in the Munich-East test area.
Locations: Haidhausen (Rosenheimer Str. 86), Giesing (Grünwalder Str. 12) & Haar (Münchener Str. 13).
Frequently asked questions
Isn't the KTM 125 Duke too sporty for beginners?
No. The 15 PS are capped at the A1 maximum, and the lowering gives you a secure footing. The sporty setup actually helps you: you learn clean throttle control from the start instead of sloppy habits on a sluggish machine.
Does the Duke have a real manual gearbox or automatic?
A real 6-speed manual gearbox with hand clutch. That's exactly what you need for A1 training — master clean clutching and shifting here and you're well prepared for any bigger machine and a later move up to A2 or A.
