Piaggio Liberty S 125 – your driving-school motorcycle for Class A1 / AM in Munich
Traffic light on Rosenheimer Strasse, about to turn green. You twist the throttle, the scooter pulls away smoothly, no clutch, no gears, no stalling. That's the moment many of our A1 and B196 learners realise riding a scooter frees your head for the traffic around you. The Piaggio Liberty S 125 is built to make that first step easy.
Why you learn in the Piaggio Liberty S 125
What our learners feel on the Liberty S straight away: no clutch, no gear lever. The continuously variable automatic handles the ratios on its own, you simply accelerate and brake. That removes a whole construction site that eats up attention on a geared motorcycle. This is our red thread for this vehicle: a 125 automatic scooter with no clutch work. If you've never handled a two-wheeler, you can focus on what matters from minute one, namely where you look, lean angle, and reading the traffic. The 8 kW are easy to meter, and ABS catches braking that's too harsh. That takes the pressure off without making the test easier, because steering, looking and deciding are still all on you. That's exactly why many B196 switchers and A1 beginners start with us on this scooter: build confidence first, then build pace.
Technology & equipment at a glance
| Power / displacement | 10.9 hp (8 kW) from 124 cc. This is the typical A1 power class, enough to flow with city traffic without the power catching you out. You learn to meter the throttle deliberately rather than just react. |
| Transmission | Continuously variable automatic (CVT), no clutch, no shifting. This is where the learning advantage sits: your left hand and both feet stay free for braking and balance, your head stays free for traffic. The classic stall at the lights simply can't happen. |
| Brakes / safety | ABS as standard. In practice you can grab the brakes more firmly without the front wheel locking. That helps when drilling emergency stops, but it does not replace the braking feel you have to build up yourself. |
| Engine | Economical single-cylinder four-stroke engine. It runs smoothly and predictably, which is worth its weight in gold in your first lessons: no surprise load changes, so you can rely on even pull-away and clean acceleration. |
| Model year | 2020 model. A current Euro standard and up-to-date tech mean the ride feels like what you'll actually meet on the road after your licence. You're not practising on an old-timer but on a realistic everyday city scooter. |
| Consumption / environment | Just 2.5 l/100 km, 61 g/km CO2. Secondary for the test, but good to know: the scooter is frugal, making it a realistic commuter around eastern Munich once you're riding on your own after the licence. |
Assistance systems are a learning aid – you take the exam yourself.
What you may drive
On the Liberty S 125 you're in the 125 class: vehicles up to 125 cc and a maximum of 11 kW. That covers two routes we often take. Class A1 from age 16 as a standalone scooter and light-motorcycle licence, and the B196 extension for anyone who has held a car licence (class B) for at least five years and, after training, may ride 125s without sitting a separate test. Because this scooter is automatic, you learn here deliberately without any clutch work, which suits A1 automatic and B196 equally well.
Locations & test area Munich East
Picture the approach toward Ramersdorf: a tight roundabout with rush-hour traffic pushing in from the right. On a geared bike you'd now be thinking about clutch and gear. On the Liberty S you just ease the throttle, hold your line and look where you want to go. This clutch-free flowing-along is exactly what we drill with you in the eastern Munich test area until the roundabout becomes routine.
Locations: Haidhausen (Rosenheimer Str. 86), Giesing (Grünwalder Str. 12) & Haar (Münchener Str. 13).
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to use a clutch or change gears on the Liberty S 125?
No. The Liberty S 125 has a continuously variable automatic. You simply accelerate and brake, there's no clutch and no gear lever. That's why it's ideal if you want to focus on riding and traffic rather than shifting. It's exactly why we use it for A1 automatic and B196.
Are the 8 kW of the Liberty S 125 enough for the city and its edges?
For Munich city traffic and the eastern Munich test area the power is a good fit. With 8 kW (10.9 hp) you flow along with traffic without the acceleration surprising you. Important: you ride the test yourself, the scooter only helps you learn calmly and in control.
